Komen is a national organization addressing breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach, and public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact against the disease. The local charity selected is #teamcorrie Cancer Foundation. #teamcorrie is a local charity whose mission is to provide one time grants to cancer patients residing in Union County, Arkansas to assist with medical expenses incurred by their cancer treatment.
In conjunction, Murphy USA promoting breast cancer early detection through their “Murphy USA Fueling the Cure” campaign. The Murphy USA Fueling the Cure campaign offers $50 gift cards to the first 400 women who receive their screening mammogram during the month of October at Medical Center of South Arkansas. Murphy USA has also purchased 100 mammograms for individuals who have no insurance. Most women with private, employer based, Medicaid, and Medicare insurance have coverage for breast cancer screening services and will have no out of pocket costs.
Screening mammograms are performed for women who have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer and are considered at average risk for breast cancer. Women ages 35 to 39 should receive one baseline screening mammogram and women 40 years of age or older should receive screening mammograms annually. Different guidelines apply to women at higher risk.
Breast cancer typically has no symptoms when the tumor is small and most easily treated, which is why screening is important for early detection. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 8 women (13%) will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 39 women (3%) will die from breast cancer.
“Murphy USA is proud to be able to support and encourage women in our community to receive screening mammograms because early detection saves lives,” said Courtney Crotty MUSA Philanthropy & Community Relations
