Knowing your Calcium Score may help save your life.
There is now a non-invasive test available at the Medical Center of South Arkansas, through the Heart & Vascular Institute, called a Coronary CT Calcium Score that can evaluate your risk "in a heartbeat." This non-invasive test is called HeartScan.
Calcium Scoring: A simple test can save your life.
What is a HeartScan?
The HeartScan is a Cardiac CT scan used to obtain information about the location and extent of calcium deposits, also known as plaque, found in the coronary arteries. Coronary arteries are the vessels that supply the heart with oxygenated blood.
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the most common form of heart disease and the leading cause of heart attacks. CAD occurs as plaque builds up in the arteries. The plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol and other substances, including calcium, which can narrow the arteries or even close off blood flow to the heart. The result may be severe chest pain, heart attack or death. It's the calcium in those plaques that the HeartScan can detect and the findings are expressed as a calcium score.
The HeartScan can detect CAD at an early stage in individuals before symptoms have developed and estimate your risk for future CAD and/or heart attack.
